The Deathcab was our first motorsport machine, originally spotted for sale in the Bay Area by one of the founders and current captain, C. C wanted to buy the thing and race it and asked his friend Z to be the 2nd person to help indulge in this hobby. Z wisely said racing should be a team effort and that he’ll only contribute if C can find at least 4 other suckers.

To Z’s surprise, C was able to find enough enthusiastic muppets to go get the stupid thing.

It came with a seat, a good cage, a running motor and transmission and not much else. We are the 5th? 6th? team to own it? Not entirely sure. The car started its racing career in the early days of 24 Hours of Lemons races and has been driving in that series since, including under our ownership.

The Deathcab went through four engines and six engine rebuilds before we decided to shift our efforts over to building up our next project, The Shell (name is a placeholder).

THE DEATHCAB

Some of the stuff we learned operating the Deathcab being carried over into our current project:

  • It takes about 3 hours to remove the engine

  • It takes about 3 days to rebuild the engine unless you’re being heckled by a bunch of rednecks

  • Do not cheap out on your valves

  • Make sure the oil drain plug is tight

  • Make DAMN sure that oil drain plug is tight
